Es gibt Washes von zahlreichen Herstellen, in den verschiedensten Farben und mit ganz unterschiedlichen Qualitäten. Washes von Army Painter sind aktuell zum Beispiel sehr beliebt, aber warum nicht selbst welche herstellen?
Die Frage ist nur, was man dafür braucht. Zum Glück bin ich zwischendurch mal auf diese Anleitung gestoßen.
Lots of suppliers have washes in different colors and qualities in their catalogue. Especially the Washes from Army Painter are quite populer these days. But why not make those things yourself?
You just need to know the ingredients. I was lucky to stumble over this description not so long ago.
Was benötigt man also (von links nach rechts)?
- eine normale Tröpfenflasche (hier 17ml)
- eine Tröpfchenflasche mit Skala
- ein Netzmittel (hier Ochsengalle)
Das dient dazu die Fließeigenschaften des Washes zu verbessern. - mattes Acrylmedium
Im grunde Farblose Acrylfarbe. Ohne die wäre die „Farbe“ hinterher noch wasserlöslich. - hochpigmentierte Acryltine (hier einmal transperent und einmal deckend)
Hier muss man sich ein wenig nach dem passenden Lieferanten umsehen. Ich finde die von Liquitex ganz gut, aber habe die bisher nur im lokalen Boesner entdeckt. In deren Onlineshop sind die nicht zu finden (oder ich war bisher zu blind ^^). Schmincke hat allerdings auch Acryltinten (glaube für Airbrush) im Angebot. Die funktionieren genauso gut und sind zumindest online bei Boesner zu bekommen. - Destiliertes Wasser (nicht angebildet)
Klingt also gar nicht so wild oder? :)
So what do we need (listed from left to right)?
- a standard dropper bottle (17ml in this case)
- another dropper bottle with a scale on it
- a flow aid (surfactant) (ox gall in this example)
It’s needed to break the surface tension of the water and make the wash flow better into the recesses. - matte acrylic medium
To make the paint waterproof - highly pigmented acrylic inks (one of the shown is transparent the other one opaque)
You maybe have to search a while for a good supplier for these. At least in Germany it’s a little tricky. So far I found the Liquitex acrylic inks only in a lokal store of Boesner but not online. The acrylic inks of Schmincke (for Airbrush I think) work as well and at least those can be bought online here. - destilled water (not in the picture)
Doesn’t sound that bad or does it? :)
Vorbereitung / Preparations
Natürlich muss man ein wenig mit den Tinten beschäftigen, um den gewünschten Farbton zu finden. Darüber hinaus muss man aber auch noch das Netzmittel anmischen. Deswegen die zweite Tröpfchenflasche mit der Skala.
Im Originalrezept wird Flow Aid von Liquitex verwendet und entsprechend mit dem destilierten Wasser angemischt. Da ich Flow Aid aber nicht in akzeptabler Form bekommen konnte, habe ich damals weiter recherchiert und bin dann auf die Ochsengalle gestoßen. Die wird, so wie ich es verstanden habe, eigentlich schon ewig von Malern zum entfetten und so und zum Reduzieren der Oberflächenspannung von Flüssigkeiten verwendet.
Wunderbar. Genau das letztere hatte ich ja gesucht.
Da ich nicht wusste, wie sich die Ochsengalle im Vergleich zu dem anderen Flow Aid verhält, habe ich anfangs etwas herumprobiert und mische es mittlerweile nach Gefühl auf 1:10 bis 1:5 mit destiliertem Wasser an.
Wenn also der Farbton gefunden ist und das Netzmittel angemischt wurde, kann es mit dem eigentlich Wash weitergehen.
For sure you have to try out the inks to get the intended color before you start mixing the wash. But you also have to prepare the flow aid. That’s what the second dropper bottle is for.
In the original recipe Liquitex Flow Aid was used but I couldn’t find a good source for it here in Germany. Thus I kept looking for an alternative and learned about ox gall at some point. Ox gall – as far as I did understand – has been in sue by painters for a long time to degrease surfaces and so and to decrease the surface tensions of fuids. The last of those things is exactly what I was looking for.
Since I did not know how ox gall works in comparison to other flow aids I had to test a little bit on the mixture. Today I tend to measure bye eye and aim for a mixture between 1/10 and 1/5 of ox gall to destille water.
So if you have found your right color and have prepared your flow aid mix it’s time to create your wash.
Schritt 1 / Step 1: Medium
Der erste Schritt ist erschreckend einfach: Man fülle das Wash-Fläschchen zur Hälfte mit dem matten Medium.
Wenn man es etwas flüssiger mag, kann man den Anteil auch reduzieren. Ich persönlich mag die etwas dickere Konsistenz. Man kann es ja zur Not auch noch verdünnen.
The first step is really easy to do. Just fill half of the dropper bottle with the acrylic medium.
If you like your wash alittle thinner feel free to reduce this amount. I tend to like the thicker wash and if I need it more thin I can still add some water.
Schritt 2 / Step 2: Tinte hinzufügen / Adding the Ink
Als nächstes füge ich gerne die Tinte dazu. Einfach tröpfchenweise auf das Medium geben, dann kann man im folgenden Schritt das Fläschchen bis zum Rand zu Ende befüllen.
Meine bisherigen Rezepte basieren alle auf einer Grundmenge von 30 Tropfen pro 17ml Tröpfchenflasche (entspricht etwa 1ml Tinte). Wenn man also vorher den gewünschten Farbton in kleineren Mengen herausgefunden hat, muss man halt etwas über das Mengenverhältnis hin und her rechnen.
Zwei Dinge sollte man dabei beachten:
1) Das Wash deckt weit weniger, als die reine Tinte. Das Farbton wird also blasser ausfallen, als beim Ausprobieren.
2) Was aber auch den Effekt hat, dass es am Ende keinen Unterschied ziwschen transparenter und deckender Tinte gibt.
Next up are the inks. Just add them dropp by drop onto the medium at this stage. So you can just fill up the bottle to the top in the following step.
My recipes so far are all based on an amount of 30 drops per 17ml dropper bottle (that’s about 1ml of ink). So if you figured out your desired color in smaller amounts just use the amount ratio to calculate your amount of drops for each ink.
There are two things you should keep in mind:
1) The wash will be much more transparent than the pure ink. Thus the color will be more faint.
2) The same effect applies on opaque inks. Using them in the wash will result in the same transparent wash like with transparent inks.
Schritt 3 / Step 3: Auffüllen / Fill it up
Jetzt kommt das Netzmittel an die Reihe. Keine wirklich schwierige Aufgabe, denn es muss lediglich das Fläschchen vollgemacht werden. Das müsste doch jeder hinbekommen oder? ;P
Now you apply your mix of flow aid and water. No really difficult task since you just have to fill up the bottle. Everybody should be able to perform that. Or not? ;P
So in etwa sollte das dann aussehen.
In diesem Beispiel habe ich übrigens ein oranges Wash angemischt, das ich demnächst mal für meine Tau antesten möchte.
The result should look roughly like this.

Schritt 4 / Step 4: Schütteln! / Shake it!
Nun kräftig schütteln, damit sich die Bestandteile gut vermischen können. Das gilt übrigens auch die spätere Verwendungen der Washes, denn, wenn die Flasche länger steht, werden sich wahrscheinlich Teile der Tinte oder so am Boden absetzen.
Aber das ist bei den normalen Farben ja auch nicht anders.
Now give it a good solid shake. This way the different parts can mix well togehter. This applies also for later uses of those washes. Especially when the bottle rest for a while parts of the ink or so will sink down to its bottom. But that’s the same with other colors as well.
Schritt 5 / Step 5: Testen, notieren, beschriften / Test it, note it down and label it
Ich habe mir zum Glück schon bei meinen ersten Versuchen angewöhnt die Mischungen meiner Washes aufzuschreiben, damit ich sie, wenn sie gut waren, später wieder reproduzieren kann.
I’m glad I started to write down the recipes of my washes from the very beginning. This way I can remember the mixture and can recreate them if they were good.
Ein einfaches, aber effektives Etikett für das Fläschen kann auch nicht schaden. Simple Klebeschilder aus dem Schreibwarenladen erfüllen den Zweck ganz wunderbar.
Mit diesen zwei Schritten hat man dann auch gleich den ersten Testlauf erschlagen. ;)
A simple lable on the bottle can be very usefull, too. I used small self-sticking label stationery shop. They do the job just great.
And with there two steps you also did the first test run of your wash. ;)
Kostenübersicht / Cost overview
Die Kosten der selbstgemachten Washes zu errechnen ist nicht ganz präzise und aus meiner Sicht auch nicht der wichtigste Faktor. Die Farben selbst und nach Bedarf anmischen zu können, finde ich wesentlich interessanter. :)
Trotzdem hier ein paar Zahlen:
To calculate the costs of the home made washes is not the most precise thing and as well not the most important factor in my eyes. To create to color yourself and as you need them is much more interesting to me. :)
Nevertheless here war some numbers:
- Medium: ~10 Euro für / for 237ml
- Tinte / Inks: ~6 Euro für / for 30ml
- Ochsengalle / Ox gall: ~5 Euro für / for 60ml
Das destilierte Wasser kostet etwas 2 Euro für 5 Liter von daher fällt es kaum ins Gewicht und die beiden Tröpfchenflaschen kann man nur bedingt einkalkuklieren, da man sie mehrfach verwenden kann.
The destilled water costs about 2 Euros for 5 liters and thus does not really count in summary and the two dropper bottles also can’t be taken into account directly since they can be reused.
Man benötigt etwa 8ml Medium (circa 33ct), etwa 1ml Tinte (circa 20ct) und effektiv etwa 1ml Ochsengalle (circa 9ct).
Das macht in Summe 62ct. Sagen wir 65 wegen einiger Rundungen und Ungenauigkeiten. Oben drauf würden, so wie ich sie kaufe, noch 45ct für die Tröpfchenflasche kommen.
Also 1,10 Euro für ~17ml Wash.
Angenehmer Preis, wenn man mal wirklich benötigt, finde ich. Zum Beispiel für größere Mengen Gelände oder Massenarmeen. :)
You need about 8ml of medium (circa 33 Euro cents), about 1ml of ink (circa 20 Euro cents) and effectivley about 1ml of ox gall (circa 9 Euro cents).
That’s 62 Euro cents in total. Or let’s say 65 because of rounding an imprecise measuring. You would have to add 45 more cents (at least that’s what I pay) on top pof that fopr the dropper bottle.
So it’s 1,10 Euros for ~17ml of wash.
Not bad if you need a bigger of amount of it I think. For lots of terrain or a mass army for example. :)
